West Country Wolves was created to give girls across the South West access to opportunities that go beyond local league basketball — combining representative sport with leadership, mentoring and real development.
Meet THE Founders
Rio was already deeply embedded in basketball — coaching, playing, advocating for girls in the sport across the South West. Rachel came to support her sessions and saw first-hand what basketball could do for young people.
After a year of building Bristol Bulls together, one thing kept coming back to them: the opportunities available to girls simply didn't match what they deserved.
Their first idea was to create a team that could compete internationally. But the more they talked about it, the bigger the vision became.
Development isn't just about playing basketball. It's what goes beyond the court — what it takes to build
a fundraiser, create a community, bring girls together through workshops and mentoring, and give them a safe space to grow into the women they're becoming.
West Country Wolves was built to bridge that gap.
Two women, building what they both wished had existed when they were growing up.

RIO
CO-FOUNDER & HEAD COACH
Rio's relationship with basketball started in secondary school — but finding a team to play for wasn't easy.
She pushed through, eventually joining a women's team in Bristol and going on to have victorious years competing at the top of the local league.
Coaching was always where her heart was though. Alongside playing, she took on coaching roles with the women's team and started her own under 10s team, falling in love with the full circle moment of giving kids the same thing that changed her life.
That Friday morning volunteer slot — walking into schools as the coach who introduces children to basketball — is Rio doing exactly what she wished someone had done for her.
As girls' lead for WEBBA Juniors, she oversees girls' community basketball across the region. She and Rachel ran the FIBA Her World, Her Rules event in the South West — getting over 45 girls on court in a single session.

Rachel didn't come from a basketball background. She came from a love of sport — years of kickboxing, a passion for fitness, the kind of person you'll find at a race or a HYROX on a weekend.
When she came into Rio's world and saw what basketball could do for young people, she fell in love with the sport properly. She went and got her Level 1 basketball coaching qualification — which tells you everything about how Rachel approaches things.
Away from the court, Rachel built her first business
in her early twenties and went on to create a social media and content strategy business working with multi-million pound brands.
She brings that same strategic clarity to West Country Wolves — the foundations, the planning, the details that other people brush over.
She tells people she's team manager.
In reality, she is the reason everything works.

BASKETBALL DEVELOPMENT
We develop players through proper coaching, competitive game time and structured skill development. The habits built in our sessions — focus, resilience, showing up — carry into everything else.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
Through mentoring, workshops and specialist sessions, we develop leadership behaviours that go well beyond the court. Confidence, communication and responsibility are built deliberately into every part of the programme.

OPPORTUNITY PATHWAYS
Paris is our first opportunity.
It won't be our last. We create access to regional competitions, international tournaments and development experiences that most girls in the South West wouldn't otherwise reach.

Girls leave West Country Wolves more confident and more aware of what they're capable of — not because we tell them they're great, but because we put them in environments that challenge them to find out for themselves.
